Rain

Purpose of Tests

  • • The effectiveness of protective covers, cases, and seals in preventing the penetration of water into the material.
  • • The capability of the materiel to satisfy its performance requirements during and after exposure to water.
  • • Any physical deterioration of the materiel caused by the rain.
  • • The effectiveness of any water removal system.
  • • The effectiveness of protection offered to a packaged materiel.

Industry Applications

  • • Defense: MIL-STD 810 Method 506.4 sets out clear guidelines for wind and rain resistance. Aside from simply meeting your regulatory compliance requirements, proper testing is essential to ensuring you are delivering a product that will be reliable in all weather conditions.
  • • Aviation: Guidelines for water resistance in civilian aircraft are set out in RTCA DO-160 Section 10.0. The importance of proper rain and wind testing for commercial planes is obvious — when an aircraft is required to fly in almost any condition, it must be able to do so safely and effectively.
  • • Telecom: The devices that run our information infrastructure need to be able to stand up to the strongest environmental conditions, with heavy winds and rain being the most common of them. Ultimately any system component, device or product that’s exposed to the elements needs to be properly tested for wind and water resistance. EnScientific Testings and Certification can design a custom training program that takes all environmental factors into account and delivers useable findings that can help you further refine your products.
  • Three Procedures

    • Procedure I - Rain and Blowing Rain. is applicable for materiel which will be deployed out doors and which will be unprotected from rain or blowing rain.
    • Procedure II - Water tightness. Consider Procedure II when large (shelter-size) materiel is to be tested and a blowing-rain facility is not available or practical.
    • Procedure III - Drip. is appropriate when materiel is normally protected from rain but may be exposed to falling water from condensation or leakage from upper surfaces.
