Purpose of Tests
MIL-STD-810 Method 519 tests products for use in applications where are guns mounted on aircraft or other systems to verify your electronics or electronics packaging can withstand residual vibration, shock or noise when the guns are fired. Typically, an application will require a certain test method; 519 has four different procedures. These tests identify damage, from an electronics fatigue standpoint, from glass components to brittle fractures within the system. You’re looking at a variety of effects that gunfire and muzzle blasts can have on the product as it is being exercised on a fighter, small weapons platform, helicopter or something altogether different. Gunfire vibration tests are performed to provide a degree of confidence that materiel can physically and functionally withstand the relatively infrequent, repetitive shock or transient vibration encountered in operational environments during the firing of a low caliber gun.
Effects of a gunfire environment.
Exposure to a gunfire environment has the potential for producing adverse effects on the physical and functional integrity of all materiel. In general, the level of adverse effects increases with the caliber of the gun, proximity of the materiel to the gun, and the duration of the gunfire environment. The gunfire firing rate and the duration of gunfire environment exposure that correspond with natural frequencies of the Materiel (along with its sub harmonics and super harmonics) will magnify the adverse effects on the materiel's overall physical and functional integrity.
Procedures
This method includes a set of three Pulse Procedures and one Vibration Procedure.
Pulse Procedures
- Procedure I: Direct Reproduction of Measured Materiel Response Data.
- Procedure II: Statistically Generated Repetitive Pulse – Mean (Deterministic) Plus Residual (Stochastic) Pulse.
- Procedure III: Repetitive Pulse Shock Response Spectrum (SRS).
Vibration Procedure
Procedure IV: High Level Random Vibration/Sine-on-Random Vibration / Narrowband Random-on- Random Vibration.
